Why Email Marketing Is Still Important – 2021
So, you’re sick of hearing that “email marketing is dead”? Good, I agree! Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get

I can’t think of a single, defining failure that I’ve had. Rather, I’ve had a number of missteps along the way- bad decisions or putting energy into projects that didn’t quite pan out. Although, initially, I do agonize after these setbacks, I don’t get stuck in that headspace. I do my best to bounce back and move forward with my Plan B or C.
I also try to figure out what the lesson in that failure was for me and apply it moving forward. There’s always a silver lining and all of the setbacks and failures have taught me to become more tenacious and innovative, or redirected me to a better path. There is not one single successful person out there who hasn’t been hit with failure along the way- not one.
I’ve had both little and big wins that I’ve been delighted by. I am most proud of myself for always taking initiative and going after my goals and those things that I want to do (despite obstacles). Some recent wins that have gratified me include becoming a published author (a goal since childhood) and starting my new show Launch with Charlene Walters- a business talk show which airs on Roku, Amazon Fire and Apple TV- Monday – Friday at 9AM- DB & A Network. I’m also really proud of being a mother to my two amazing daughters.
I am looking forward to what’s next, too. Hopefully my biggest achievement is yet to come.
I have always had the goal of becoming an author as I mentioned. I was an English major undergrad, but developed an interest in business, and went on to get an MBA and a PhD in Marketing. Much of my career has been spent in marketing and Higher Ed. I sort of bounced back and forth between the two until I eventually created a Digital Entrepreneurship MBA program and started mentoring, writing and training full time.
I had always done a lot of writing professionally and was eventually inspired by a colleague to get back to my goal of writing a book. I started thinking about where I could add value in the market and how I could incorporate those areas that I like to speak and write about. It eventually boiled down to the topic of how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. Mindset and business success are so closely correlated.
When I looked at the other books that were out there, I realized that there weren’t many aimed at entrepreneurial mindset for women so that is how I decided to write Launch Your Inner Entrepreneur. And I was able to publish it at a perfect time when many women exited the workforce (2.2 million in 2020) and when there was a big rise in entrepreneurship and a need for additional options for women. I was so happy to be able to help, particularly those women (and men) who are the primary breadwinners for their families (like me). [Yes, men can read it, too.]
In my book, readers learn about the correlation between mindset and success in business (it’s so critical)- how to take action, organize their time, improve their financial confidence, build their visibility and brand, grow their resilience and tenacity, become a better leader, increase innovation, prevent burnout and more. There are also workbook activities at the end of the book to help entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs implement what they’ve learned.
I love to learn new things and talk to different people. I think that is certainly one of my strategic advantages. In general, I read as much as I can, research and write, listen to and am a guest on podcasts, interview people on my show and ask questions, watch workshops and videos and more. You can absolutely learn from everyone you come into contact with- even if it is just one or two takeaways so put yourself out there and join the conversation.
I have received a lot of great advice along the way. Probably my favorite is “God helps those who help themselves” from my Mom. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate this concept. It’s about the idea that you won’t get anything sitting around waiting for it to happen. You have to go after what you want and keep going until you get there. Nothing is going to be handed to you on a silver platter (nothing!).
Keep doing those things that you love and going after your goals. If you want to make it happen, stick with it and you’ll eventually achieve it. And remember, nothing worthwhile happens overnight so work on your patience and resilience when you hit setbacks. It will take a lot of work to get there, but you will eventually. You’ve got this!
Absolutely. I offer mentoring services to help entrepreneurs and anyone who wants to move forward with their business or in their life.
